Although it started as a fairly small hamlet it has grown considerably throughout the 1980s and 1990s with new housing.

Boshaw Whams Reservoir
Boshaw Whams Reservoir is an upland waterbody near to the village of Hade Edge, in West Yorkshire, England. The site was originally built in 1840 to keep a supply of water for mill-owners downstream, but is now owned by Yorkshire Water but still used as a compensation reservoir for river water levels. It is used recreationally by a sailing club and for fishing. It is the only known site in Yorkshire where the invasive narrow-clawed crayfish is present.

River Ribble, West Yorkshire
The River Ribble is a minor river running through the town of Holmfirth in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England.
Rising at the outflow of Holme Styes Reservoir, itself fed by Reynard Clough (which has a tributary, Catholes Gutter), Hades Clough and Long Ing Dike, the Ribble flows northwards, collecting Fox Clough and Beaver Clough from the west, before joining the River Holme by Towngate and Hollowgate in Holmfirth. The confluence of the two rivers was also marked by a weir, but this was removed in 1944 when Italian prisoners of war were tasked with removing it.

Upperthong is a village approximately 807 feet (246 m) above sea level, in the civil parish of Holme Valley, in the Kirklees district, in West Yorkshire, England, near the town of Holmfirth, approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of Huddersfield. In 2005, Kirklees Council stated that the population of Upperthong was 1,116; by 2019, the figure was 1,938.
