Porto, officially the Ancient, Very Noble, Ever Loyal and Undefeated City of Porto, also known in English as Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. It is the capital of the Porto District and one of the Iberian Peninsula's major urban areas. Porto city proper, which is the entire municipality of Porto, is small compared to its metropolitan area, with an estimated population of 252,687 people in a municipal area of 41.42 km2. As of 2025, the Porto metropolitan area has around 1.8 million people in an area of 2,395 km2, making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. It is recognized as a global city with a Gamma + rating from the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.
On the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centers, and its core was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, as the Historic Centre of Porto, Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar. The historic area is also a National Monument of Portugal. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Settlement dates back to the 2nd century BC, when it was an outpost of the Roman Republic. Its combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name Portugal, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin.
Port wine, one of Portugal's most famous exports, is named after Porto, as the metropolitan area, and in particular the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the packaging, transport, and export of fortified wine. Porto is on the Portuguese Way path of the Camino de Santiago. In 2014 and 2017, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency. In 2023, Porto was named City of the Year by Food and Travel magazine. In 2024, the city was named World's Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination at the World Travel Awards.

The Porto Municipal Chamber is the administrative authority in the municipality of Porto. It has 7 freguesias in its area of jurisdiction and is based in the city of Porto, on the Porto District. These freguesias are: Aldoar, Foz do Douro e Nevogilde, Bonfim, Campanhã, Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória, Lordelo do Ouro e Massarelos, Paranhos and Ramalde.
The Porto City Council is the second largest in the country and is made up of 13 councillors, representing different political forces. The first candidate on the list with the most votes in a municipal election or, in the event of a vacancy, the next candidate on the list, takes office as President of the Municipal Chamber.

Porto is a district located on the north-west coast of Portugal. The district capital is the city of Porto, the second largest city in the country. It is bordered by the Aveiro and Viseu districts to the south, Braga district to the north and Vila Real district to the east.
Its area is 2,395 km2 and its population is 1,817,172. In 2017, the main legal foreign populations were from Brazil, China, Ukraine, Italy, Spain, Angola, and Cape Verde. These numbers exclude those who obtained Portuguese citizenship, which is regular among recent Portuguese Brazilians or Portuguese-Africans.

Aliados is an underground light rail station on line D of the Porto Metro system in Porto, Portugal. It is situated to the south of Porto City Hall and under the Avenida dos Aliados, one of central Porto's main streets, from which it takes its name.
The central tunnelled section of line D, including Aliados station, opened on 17 September 2005, with trains initially running between Câmara de Gaia, to the south, and Pólo Universitário to the north. The line has since been extended from Câmara de Gaia to Vila d’Este, and from Pólo Universitário to Hospital de São João.
The station is preceded by Trindade and followed by São Bento stations. On weekdays, trains run every five to six minutes, declining to every 10 minutes on weekends and evenings.
The station platforms are underground, and there are two through tracks, each served by a side platform. Porto tram line 22 also stops at the Avenida dos Aliados near the station.

Trindade is a station on the Porto Metro system in Porto, Portugal. It is the system's principal interchange station, being the only station served by all lines. It is situated on the site of the former Porto-Trindade railway station, just to the north of City Hall. It was opened in 2002.
