Interstellar Rodeo was an annual three-day outdoor music event held the last weekend of July in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, established in 2012 and held at the Heritage Amphitheatre within Hawrelak Park. From 2015 to 2017, Six Shooter Records also had an Interstellar Rodeo in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The final Edmonton Interstellar Rodeo was in 2019.

Edmonton Blues Festival

The Edmonton Blues Festival is an annual blues music festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, which was first held in 1999. The festival runs for three days in mid-August at the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park. In 2008, the festival was the recipient of the 'Keeping The Blues Alive Award' from the Blues Foundation, based in Memphis, Tennessee. Due to renovations that will closed Hawrelak Park until 2026, the festival moved to Edmonton's RE/MAX Field for the 2023 edition. The festival was last held in 2024. In 2026, it was announced that the festival was permanently cancelled.

William Hawrelak Park

William Hawrelak Park is a park in Edmonton, Alberta. Formerly known as Mayfair Park, it was initially going to be developed into a 500-lot subdivision; however, when the Strathcona Land Syndicate forfeited their taxes the city obtained the title for the land in 1922. This land lay unused until 1954, when Mayor William Hawrelak proposed to create a 350-acre riverside park in this area as it would “fit into the overall park development of the City along the lines of the zoo, and the golf courses and other picnic areas”. The digging of the man-made lakes began in 1959 and later was completed in 1964 but had few facilities. The official opening day of Mayfair Park was on Dominion Day, July 1, 1967. It was renamed in 1982 for Hawrelak, who died in office in 1975 while serving as mayor of Edmonton.

Groat Bridge

Groat Bridge spans the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is a part of Groat Road. The bridge is composed of two spans that are side by side. The original structure was rehabilitated in 1990 and again in 2020. The 2020 $48 million rehabilitation saw the decks of both spans replaced one side at a time, with the new decks placed on the existing piers. The new decks feature an expanded shared-use path on the east side of the bridge. Groat Bridge connects the communities of River Valley Mayfair on the south end to River Valley Glenora on the north end.

National Institute for Nanotechnology

The National Research Council of Canada Nanotechnology Research Centre is a research institution located on the University of Alberta main campus, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Its primary purpose is nanoscience research. The institute was established in 2001 as a partnership between the National Research Council of Canada, the University of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. It is administered as an institute of the National Research Council of Canada, and governed by a board of trustees nominated by the partners. Its core funding comes from the Government of Canada and additional funding and research support comes from the university, Government of Alberta, and various federal and provincial funding agencies. In June 2006, the institute moved into its present 20,000 m2 facility, designed to be one of the world's largest buildings for nanotechnological research. There are at most two or three other facilities worldwide matching the new building in scale and capacity. In 2017, the institute became the Nanotechnology Research Centre, following a recognition of the institute as its own research centre. Although on the premises of the University of Alberta, the research centre is a branch of the National Research Council of Canada.

History

Interstellar Rodeo was established in 2012 by Shauna de Cartier of Six Shooter Records. The event took place annually during the last weekend of July at the Heritage Amphitheatre at Hawrelak Park in the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The amphitheatre features covered seating with uncovered grassed areas beyond. Interstellar Rodeo featured artist-wine pairings. In 2019, festival passes cost between 149 and 279 dollars. In 2014, Interstellar Rodeo was shut down for one day due to poor weather. The 2019 Festival was shut down for approximately one hour on July 27 due to severe thunderstorms in eastern Alberta. In late 2019, de Cartier announced the festival would be going on hiatus and not returning for summer 2020.

Interstellar Rodeo Winnipeg

From 2015 to 2017, Interstellar Rodeo expanded to Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Winnipeg festival took place at The Forks in mid-August. The festival line-up typically featured some overlap with the Edmonton festival but with the addition of Manitoba-based artists such as Leonard Sumner. The festival dropped out of Winnipeg due to financial concerns from competing with free concert series in Winnipeg such as the Canada Summer Games concerts in 2017.
