Mitsikeli

Mitsikeli is a mountain range in the central part of the Pindus mountains, in Epirus, Greece. The mountain is located northeast of Ioannina and Lake Ioannina. Its highest elevation is 1,810 m. It stretches from near Kalpaki in the northwest to the eastern end of Lake Ioannina, a total length of 35 km. The northeastern slopes and the lower northwestern part of Mitsikeli are forested. The nearest mountains are the Tymfi to the north, the Lygkos to the northeast and the Lakmos to the east. It is drained by tributaries of the Thyamis to the northwest, towards Lake Ioannina to the southwest, by the Voidomatis to the northeast and by the Arachthos to the southeast. Mitsikeli forms the southwestern border of the Zagori region. Villages in the mountains include Kato Pedina and Asprangeloi in the northwest, Dikorfo and Perivleptos in the central part, and Kryovrysi in the southeast. The Greek National Road 6 passes south of the mountain, the Greek National Road 20 is to the west. The famous Perama Cave is to the southwest. There is a telecommunications tower on the summit.

Perama is a town and a former municipality in the Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ioannina, of which it is a municipal unit. It lies about 4 km north of central Ioannina. The town's name means "passage" and it lies on the northern edge of lake Pamvotis. It is famous for its cave, known as the "Cave of Perama". The cave, extending five kilometres below the ground and having been explored fully only up to one kilometre, has a remarkable arrangement of stalagmites and stalactites. An 11th-century church in the town dedicated to Saint Haralambos and reputedly built by Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus is in a bad state of repair and is rarely open to the general public. The town lies on GR-6 between Igoumenitsa and Metsovo. The municipal unit has an area of 105.725 km2, the community 7.597 km2. The municipal unit has a population of 4,695 inhabitants. Its largest settlements are Pérama, Krýa, Kranoúla, Amfithéa and Perívleptos.

Name

The toponym stems from the Modern Greek noun kamini, derived from the Ancient Greek kaminos and the suffix -ia, from -ea. Nouns of the word such as kaminia mean 'the content or one-time product of a kiln' and kamineia 'the firing'. The word is a loanword in the Romance languages, the Slavic languages and in Albanian; it is also used in Southern Italian placenames.

Demographics

The village is inhabited by Greeks, Arvanite families who assimilated into the local population and some Sarakatsani who settled in the village during the early 20th century. The arrival of Orthodox Albanians (locally called "Arvanites") occurred in the modern period and originate from the wider Souli area in central Greek Epirus, while the Sarakatsani are Greek speakers.
