Clayton West is a village in the civil parish of Denby Dale, in the Kirklees district, in West Yorkshire, England. It had a population of 2,704 in 2008. It is 11 miles (18 km) south-east of Huddersfield and 7 miles (11 km) north-west of Barnsley.

Whistlestop Valley

Whistlestop Valley, formerly the Kirklees Light Railway, is a visitor attraction featuring a 3+1⁄2-mile (5.6 km) long 15 in (381 mm) gauge minimum-gauge railway. The attraction's main site is in the village of Clayton West in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England which was first opened to the public on 19 October 1991, with a second, smaller site in a rural area near the village of Shelley. The railway at Whistlestop Valley runs along the trackbed of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's former branch line, from Clayton West via Skelmanthorpe to Shelley Woodhouse (a few yards close to the former Clayton West Junction 1⁄2 mile (0.8 km), near Shepley) on the Penistone line from Huddersfield to Sheffield via Penistone and Barnsley. From 1991 to 2021 the attraction was known as the Kirklees Light Railway. In June 2021, the attraction was rebranded under the name Whistlestop Valley but retains the name Kirklees Light Railway for its 15-inch railway operation.

Clayton West railway station is a station that was previously on the national rail network (until 1983) and now forms the eastern terminus of the Whistlestop Valley. It is situated in Clayton West, West Yorkshire, England.

Scissett

Scissett is a village in West Yorkshire, England. It is 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Huddersfield and 8 miles (13 km) north-west of Barnsley. According to the 2001 census, the village had a population of 1,324. Scissett is halfway between the villages of Clayton West, Skelmanthorpe and Denby Dale on the A636 road to Wakefield. River Dearne runs through the village, which was affected by the 2007 United Kingdom floods. Scissett was originally in the Parish of High Hoyland, and the Wapentake of Staincross which more or less corresponds with the current Barnsley borough area. Scissett grew up around the woollen industry in the 19th century as mill owners built houses in the area for their workers. The nearby coalfields also provided employment. These industries are now gone and some of the mills are now retail units. The Scissett Baths (and leisure centre) is one of the main attractions for the surrounding area. Scissett has first and middle schools to provide education for children ages 4 to 13. Scissett Youth Band was founded in the village in 1978 but moved to Shelley Methodist Hall in 1991.

Cuckoo's Nest railway station

Cuckoos Nest railway station is a station/halt on the minimum gauge Whistlestop Valley in West Yorkshire, Northern England. It also serves the village of Scissett. The station was opened on 19 October 1991 with an inaugural run from Clayton West. The halt lies just under 1-mile (1.6 km) west of Clayton West.
