Le sous-marin fut commandé le 16 octobre 1939 à Hambourg (Blohm & Voss), sa quille fut posée le 28 février 1940, il fut lancé le 23 janvier 1941 et mis en service le 13 mars 1941, sous le commandement du Kapitänleutnant Robert Bartels (Croix allemande en Or).
