Old Eldon Square

Old Eldon Square is a public square, on Blackett Street in the English city of Newcastle upon Tyne, originally known as Eldon Square. As well as green space the square is the site of a war memorial and location for the city's Remembrance Day commemoration. The adjacent Eldon Square Shopping Centre is named after it. The square itself is named after John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, a prominent local figure. He was born in Newcastle in 1751, the son of a coal owner, and later became a lawyer and politician. He held the position of Lord Chancellor of Great Britain twice.

Eldon Square Shopping Centre

Eldon Square (stylised as ELDON SQ.) is a shopping centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It opened in 1976 on the site of Old Eldon Square, a famous part of Georgian Newcastle designed by John Dobson in 1824. The centre was initially the largest indoor shopping centre in the United Kingdom. The shopping centre spans an area that was historically significant, including the Nunn's Garden and various wards named after the town's defensive towers. The redevelopment in the mid-1970s, which left only the eastern terrace of Old Eldon Square standing, has been criticized for its architectural impact. Eldon Square has undergone several redevelopments over the years, including the addition of new malls such as St Andrew's Way, and dining areas in Grey's Quarter. Notable stores within the centre include John Lewis, Next, and the flagship Fenwick department store. The centre was called Intu Eldon Square from 2013 until 2020.

Monument Mall

Monument Mall is a shopping centre in central Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The centre is currently owned by Motcomb Estates, the property investment vehicle of David and Simon Reuben, and was purchased for £37m in April 2021. The Mall opened in 1992 adjacent to the Monument station on the Tyne and Wear Metro. It is also directly in front of Grey's Monument and Grey Street, and has an entrance on Northumberland Street. Former owners include St Martins Property Group, before being acquired by the retail property company Hammerson for £28m in March 2011, and then sold again to investment firm Aberdeen Standard Investments for £75m in December 2015.

YMCA Building, Newcastle upon Tyne

The YMCA Building was a prominent building on Blackett Street in central Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Completed in May 1900, it was demolished to facilitate the construction of the Eldon Square Shopping Centre in the early 1970s.

Bainbridge's

Bainbridge's (company name Bainbridge & Co) was a major department store in Eldon Square in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The store, which is now branded as John Lewis Newcastle, moved to its current site in 1976, but the company dates back to 1838. It claimed to be the first true department store in the world, having begun recording weekly turnover separately by department in 1849. In 2002, after a vote by store employees, the owner John Lewis changed the official name to John Lewis Newcastle.
