Hoyland is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The town has also been known as Nether Hoyland. When the urban district council was formed the name used was Hoyland Nether Urban District Council. Hoyland Nether comprised the town of Hoyland, Hoyland Common, Upper Hoyland, Elsecar, Milton, Platts Common and Wentworth. Hoyland is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, but it lies within the historic boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 2001 it had a population of 15,497. At the 2011 Census the appropriate ward (Hoyland Milton) had a population of 11,852. The name Hoyland derives from the Old English hōhland meaning 'land on a hill spur'.

The school mainly serves students living in its immediate area: Birdwell, Hoyland, Jump, Tankersley, Elsecar, Wombwell and Pilley. The school is an 11–16 academy teaching a wide curriculum in lower school (Y7-9) with a variety of qualifications in the upper school (Y10-11), such as GCSE and BTEC.

Elsecar railway station

Elsecar railway station is a railway station serving the village of Elsecar in South Yorkshire, England. It is on the Penistone Line and Hallam Line served by Northern Trains. The station was opened by the Midland Railway in July 1897 and was at one time known as Elsecar & Hoyland. CCTV was recently installed for the purposes of crime prevention. Other improvements to the station include new signage, lighting, and the installation of passenger information display screens to provide real-time service information. A new 85-bay car park at the station was opened in November 2013 – funded by South Yorkshire PTE, this cost £500,000 and is located behind the northbound platform.
